WHAT IS AN AU PAIR?

Families welcome foreign girls into their homes in exchange for help in the house and with the children.

As an Au pair you will be expected to help care for the children and with household duties which could be any of the following: vacuuming, dusting, light washing, ironing and simple cooking. These duties do range from family to family and are only a rough guide to give you an idea as to what an Au Pair does.

Being an Au pair is NOT a holiday! You will be expected to help and make an effort to fit in with the family.

Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions:

1. Age - You must be aged between 18 and 27 years.

2. Hours of Work - You will not work for more than 25/30 hours a week. You may also be required to baby-sit 2 evenings a week.

3. Pocket Money - This can vary from area to area but on average you can expect to receive £50.00 for 30 hours help (£45.00 for 25 hours help if you are Eastern European).

4. Free Time - You are entitled to one whole day free a week where you can attend language classes if desired.

5. Length of Stay - You can stay as an Au pair for up to 2 years (minimum 6 months). Some summer placements for a shorter period (3 months) may be possible, but availability is very limited.

6. Costs - You will have to pay for all your traveling costs to and from the family, plus any college and examination fees. Your board and lodging is free and provided by the family.
